Anatolia has been home to numerous civilizations and cultures. Each civilization has left a trace in arts and artisanship generating an invaluable variety with a unique cultural synthesis. Rug weaving is one of the oldest traditions in Anatolia. It first began with the arrival of the Turkish tribes from Central Asia; therefore, Anatolian rugs present a special branch in ethnic rugs category. Turkish rugs are one of the most sold household items in the world. With rich colors, warm tones and authentic textures, Turkish carpets have preserved traditional motifs since the 13th century.
The art of weaving was introduced to Anatolia with the Seljuk Empire. The oldest known Seljuk rugs date from the 13th and 14th centuries. Turkish rugs of Central Asian origin preserved all their characteristics until the 14th century when the Ottoman Empire rose. Classical Ottoman Rugs are also called palace rugs as the design and colors determined by the palace artists, similar to the ceramic tile production of that period. Twisting branches, leaves and flower motifs such as tulips, carnations and hyacinths, are woven in a naturalistic style and form the basic composition of the handmade rugs of this period.
In the beginning of the 19th century, the rugs woven in Hereke gained worldwide recognition. These rugs were originally woven only for the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The finest silk rugs in the world are still being woven in Hereke today.
